The Health Committee of Parliament is scheduled to meet today, Thursday, June 12, with the leadership of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) in an effort to address the ongoing industrial action by the group.
The GRNMA declared a nationwide strike earlier this week, citing delays in the implementation of its 2024 Collective Agreement. The agreement includes concerns over unpaid allowances and the delayed posting of nurses and midwives.
Government officials have proposed a revised timeline for implementation, suggesting the agreement take effect in 2026. According to the government, the financial obligations tied to the agreement were not included in the 2025 national budget.
Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has warned that fulfilling the agreement immediately could pose a threat to economic stability. He defended the 2026 timeline as a necessary measure to manage fiscal responsibility.
However, the GRNMA has rejected the government’s proposal, maintaining that nurses and midwives should not be penalized due to budgetary limitations. The association is demanding immediate action, explaining the critical role of its members in the healthcare system.
Today's meeting is expected to explore possible compromises to end the strike and restore normalcy in healthcare delivery across the country.
