The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, accusing it of breaching an agreed roadmap for resolving long-standing issues surrounding the implementation of revised conditions of service.
This comes after the association suspended its nationwide strike earlier this month, following assurances from the Committee that decisive action would be taken to address four key items outlined in their agreement.
However, the GRNMA says a crucial meeting initially scheduled for June 26 has been unilaterally postponed to July 10, 2025, due to the reported absence of some key stakeholders currently outside the country. The association interprets the rescheduling as a troubling sign of the Committee’s lack of urgency and commitment.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, June 26, GRNMA President Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo condemned the development and called on government to demonstrate greater respect for the nursing and midwifery profession.
“The rescheduling of the meeting in our view is in bad faith, since it may further delay the implementation of the agreed items. We have, however, decided to give the committee the benefit of the doubt and still trust that their engagement with the ministries of health and finance would be productive."
She said that the revised collective agreement must be fully implemented by the end of July 2025. Failure to do so, she warned, could result in the association resuming industrial action.
“We demand the implementation of the four agreed-upon items not later than July 2025. This is non-negotiable, and we shall advise ourselves if any attempt is made to further delay the implementation,” she said.
