Ghanaian musician, Maradona Adjei Yeboah, popularly known as Guru, has won the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (SRC) presidential election.
Guru and his running mate, Jeffrey Adu-Yeboah polled 9,455 votes out of 18,659, representing 50.7% in the election held on Wednesday.
His close contender, Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah and running mate, Lawrence Edinam Egleh secured 6645 votes, representing 35.6% of the total votes cast.
The musician was earlier disqualified from the race by the University’s Electoral Commission for being a non-resident student.
The Commission cited Article 30, which stipulates that candidates who qualify to be elected must be campus residents and must qualify to contest for a JCR position in their hall.
The disqualification was however overturned by the Appeals Board after a petition, paving way for him to contest.
The Guru-led administration will steer the affairs of the SRC for the 2024/25 academic year.
