Ghana Water Company Limited (GWL) in the Accra West Region has announced plans to take legal action against more than 800 individuals who have failed to regularize illegal water connections, despite repeated warnings.

The move follows the recent detection of nearly 1,500 cases of illegal connections across GWL’s 12 operational districts in the Accra West Region. In response, the utility provider had extended a grace period, offering offenders an opportunity to voluntarily come forward and legalize their connections without facing legal penalties.

However, according to a statement released by the Public Relations Unit of the Accra West Region, more than 800 individuals have ignored the offer, prompting the company to escalate enforcement efforts.

“These illegal connections are not just a loss of revenue—they cause water losses and service disruptions for customers who are in good standing,” said Mrs. Solace Akomeah, Communications Manager for GWL Accra West Region, in the official statement issued in Accra.

She emphasized that illegal connections constitute theft and criminal behavior that threaten the operational sustainability of the company. As a result, GWL will now work in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service to arrest and prosecute all non-compliant individuals.

“GWL will not allow the misconduct of a few to undermine the hard work of its staff or the rights of our loyal customers. Those who continue to operate illegal connections will face the full force of the law,” the statement said.

The utility company also urged the public to support its efforts by reporting any suspected illegal connections within their communities. This initiative forms part of GWL’s commitment to equitable water distribution and improved service delivery across the country.
