Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has started a controlled spillage from the Weija Dam, warning residents in downstream communities to evacuate immediately to avoid potential disaster.
In a statement issued on Friday, May 23, GWL revealed that the water level in the dam has risen to 45 feet just two feet below its maximum operating capacity due to the ongoing rainy season.
“To safeguard the structural integrity of the dam and avert any potential disaster, minimal spillage has begun. The Management of GWL is by this release sounding a word of caution to inhabitants downstream to evacuate the area to forestall any eventuality, ” the statement said.
Communities at risk include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Adakope, and surrounding areas.
GWL has urged residents in these zones to move to higher ground and follow safety directives from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other authorities.
The company also called on the Ga West Municipal Assembly to desilt the estuary and clear refuse along the river path to ensure smooth water flow into the sea and help reduce the risk of flooding.
“We kindly request that all affected residents remain cooperative and adhere to any safety instructions issued by the Municipal Assembly to ensure their safety and prevent any untoward incidents,” the statement read.
GWL emphasized that public cooperation is essential to avoid a repeat of previous flood disasters linked to dam overflows.
