The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has presented a cash reward of GH¢50,000 to Mrs. Naomi Oyo Ohene-Oti, the Ghanaian oncology nurse who won the prestigious 2025 Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award.
Mrs. Ohene-Oti, honoured internationally for her exceptional contribution to cancer care, officially presented her award to the Ministry of Health in Accra.
In his address, Mr. Akandoh commended her for bringing pride to the nation, describing her recognition as a reflection of the dedication, compassion, and professionalism of Ghanaian nurses.
“This global recognition is not just your personal success, but also a celebration of the broader nursing profession in Ghana,” he stated, adding that nurses remain the backbone of healthcare delivery, especially in underserved communities.
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of nurses, highlighting recent measures including a 50 percent reduction in nursing training school fees, the restoration of trainee allowances, and plans to upgrade selected nursing colleges into degree-awarding institutions.
Addressing Mrs. Ohene-Oti directly, Mr. Akandoh said: “Your victory is Ghana’s victory. This token of support is from the Ministry and the people of Ghana who celebrate you.”
He urged stakeholders — including unions, training schools, and regulators — to work together with government to build a resilient health system capable of competing with the best in Africa.
Mr. Akandoh concluded by pledging continued recognition for health professionals whose work strengthens healthcare delivery and enhances Ghana’s global reputation.
