Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has thrown his weight behind former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing him as the New Patriotic Party’s most battle-ready and credible choice for flagbearer ahead of the next electoral contest.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the former Information Minister urged party faithful not to be swayed by narratives suggesting that Dr. Bawumia’s loss in the 2024 general elections weakens his future prospects. Instead, he pointed to history—specifically the political journey of former President John Agyekum Kufuor—as proof that defeat can be a stepping stone, not a dead end.
Oppong Nkrumah recalled that similar skepticism once trailed Kufuor after his first presidential loss, with critics insisting he could not bounce back as a viable flagbearer.
Yet, when given another opportunity, Kufuor secured more than 50 percent of the vote and went on to preside over one of the most successful administrations in Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
“People said the same things about President Kufuor—that because he had contested and lost, his time was over. But when he returned as flagbearer, he won convincingly and rewrote Ghana’s political story,” he noted.
Drawing a direct comparison, the Ofoase-Ayirebi MP argued that Dr. Bawumia’s 2024 showing was even more impressive, given the economic headwinds and political fatigue confronting the NPP at the time.
According to him, the former Vice President’s performance under such difficult conditions demonstrates resilience, national appeal, and electoral strength—qualities that make him far from a spent force.
He dismissed claims that Dr. Bawumia is unelectable as “lazy conclusions,” stressing that party unity, strategic reorganisation, and renewed confidence could easily tilt the balance in the NPP’s favour.
“When you look at the numbers and the circumstances under which Bawumia contested, it becomes clear that the argument against him simply doesn’t stand. With unity and hard work, the NPP can win again,” he said.
Oppong Nkrumah concluded by urging party delegates and supporters to rally behind a candidate with experience, national recognition, and a tested electoral record, insisting that Dr. Bawumia remains the party’s most formidable option as the NPP charts its path back to power.
