Veteran highlife artiste Akosua Agyapong has refuted claims that she was involved in a romantic relationship with Ghanaian boxing legend, Azumah Nelson.

According to her, her famous “Mena mede meho na mese meware no aden”, to wit: “I’ve chosen to marry him and so what?” was not composed because of the former WBC super featherweight world champion.

When the song was released in the early 1990s, rumours were rife that it was in response to Akosua’s mother’s opposition to her plans to marry Azumah Nelson since they were of different ethnic groups.

That perception has lived with a lot of entertainment fanatics until now.

But speaking on ClassFM in an interview, the ‘Frema’ hitmaker said she never dated the boxer.

“People say I did that song because of Azumah, people say Azumah was chasing me and my mum didn’t want me to marry Azumah but no,  I didn’t even know Azumah then, I knew him to be a boxer but I’ve not even met him before,” Akosua told show host Nana Kwesi.

Akosua Agyapong began singing at an early age and was discovered by veteran highlife artiste Nana Ampadu in the 1990s.

In 1992, she joined fellow highlife artists Nat Brew and Rex Omar to form a group called NAKOREX.

Her first album was ‘Frema’, which was released on 1 January 1990. The ‘Frema’ album had songs which became instant hit.

They include ‘Me ye Obaa’, ‘Born again’, ‘Anan tuo’, ‘San be hwe wo mba’ among others.

Apart from singing, Akosua Agyapong is a well-known dancer and has recently been a judge on most dance shows in the country.
