In a surprising revelation, Dr. Kwaku Frimpong, the embattled President of AshantiGold SC, has disclosed that he played a pivotal role in the victory of the current Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kurt E.S. Okraku, during the GFA Presidential elections held in October 2019.
Dr. Frimpong explained that during the first round of the elections, he supported former Asante Kotoko Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Nana Yaw Amponsah (NYA).
However, when the elections advanced to a run-off, he made a strategic decision to transfer his votes, as well as all votes aligned with NYA, to Kurt Okraku.
Speaking candidly in an interview with Asempa FM, Dr. Frimpong revealed the behind-the-scenes negotiations that transpired, stating, "I gave Nana Yaw Amponsah's votes to Kurt Okraku during the second round of the 2019 GFA elections. He [Kurt] came to beg me to pay me $1,000.00 for my votes, but I gave my votes to him to win the GFA Presidency. I was with Nana Yaw due to our Kotoko connections as he came to see me at home that I should support him, which I did. But when it went to the second round, Kurt approached me for my vote, which I gave him, and even Alhaji Gruzah is my witness."
Dr. Kwaku Frimpong's disclosure adds a new layer of intrigue to the ongoing saga surrounding AshantiGold SC.
The club's suspension from Ghanaian football due to allegations of match-fixing with Inter Allies on the final day of the 2020/2021 season has further complicated matters.
Additionally, both Dr. Frimpong and his CEO son, Emmanuel Frimpong, are currently contesting their respective ten-year bans from all football-related activities in the Accra Human Rights Court.
The unfolding legal battles will continue to shed light on the intricate web of events and relationships in Ghanaian football.
