Despite securing a 2-1 victory over Young Apostles, Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito has sounded a warning to his squad, insisting they must raise their performance levels if they are to sustain their title ambitions in the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League.
The Porcupine Warriors produced a scrappy display at the Baba Yara Stadium in their outstanding Week 6 fixture. Midfielder Hubert Gyau opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, but the visitors equalized almost immediately. A late and controversial penalty, converted by captain Samba O’Neil, eventually secured all three points for Kotoko.
The win moved Kotoko into fourth place on 19 points, maintaining their unbeaten run in the campaign. Yet Zito was far from satisfied.
“When you go to the field, it is the ability and capability of the players. I will tell you that when the goalkeeper moves to the left side, try right.
I think they should buck up because this is what happened on the field, and I talked about it several times. At the end of the day, I am happy that we have won,” Zito said post-match.
Kotoko’s final outstanding fixture is against Basake Holy Stars, a Week 3 clash postponed due to their participation in the CAF Confederation Cup. Victory there could further strengthen their position in the top four, but Zito’s message is clear: performances must improve if Kotoko are to mount a serious title challenge.
