Ibrahim Adjei, former Secretary at the Office of President Nana Akufo-Addo, has called on the public to support the Road Traffic Amendment Bill, 2025, describing its passage as a key step toward regulating commercial motorcycle operations and enhancing road safety.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, December 15, Adjei said the legislation provides a clear legal framework that will encourage Okada riders to operate within the law, helping to reduce indiscipline and save lives on Ghana’s roads.
According to him, bringing commercial motor riders under regulation will create employment opportunities for young people and make riders identifiable and accountable for their actions, thereby improving compliance with traffic rules.
Mr. Adjei noted that the absence of regulation in the past allowed riders to operate at their discretion, often leading to unsafe practices. He said the new law will instill discipline in the sector and described the passage of the bill as a positive development.
He pledged his support for the legislation and urged the government to be proactive in implementing it, recommending that authorities study regulatory frameworks in other countries to ensure effective enforcement.
“Regulation instils discipline. The passage is a good thing, and we will do our best to support it. We also urge the government to be proactive and to study regulatory bodies in other countries as reference points,” he said.
