Security researchers warn of AirBorne vulnerabilities in Apple’s AirPlay, urging iPhone, Mac, and Apple device users to disable the feature immediately to prevent zero-click cyberattacks.

Urgent Warning Issued Over iPhone and AirPlay Exploit

Apple users across the globe are being urged to immediately disable the AirPlay feature on their iPhones, Macs, and compatible smart devices after researchers uncovered a critical set of vulnerabilities known as AirBorne. These flaws, if left unpatched, could allow hackers to hijack devices without any user interaction — a type of attack classified as “zero-click.” With over 2.3 billion AirPlay-enabled devices worldwide, the scale of this security threat is vast and alarming.

AirBorne Vulnerability: A Silent Cyber Menace

A new investigation by the Oligo Security team has revealed 23 distinct vulnerabilities in Apple’s AirPlay system — the wireless technology used to stream media between Apple devices and smart TVs, speakers, and more. Of those, 17 could be actively exploited by cybercriminals for remote attacks.

What makes AirBorne particularly dangerous is its capacity for silent infiltration. Devices can be compromised without any user interaction, giving hackers potential access to personal data, media files, and even network credentials. In extreme cases, malicious actors could launch broader attacks, using infected devices as gateways into entire smart home systems or connected vehicles.

Apple Responds, But Gaps Remain

Apple released a series of urgent security patches on March 31, covering iOS 18.4, macOS Sequoia 15.4, and tvOS 18.4. These updates were designed to plug the holes identified in the AirBorne vulnerabilities.

However, security experts are sounding the alarm for millions of third-party AirPlay-compatible devices that rely on updates from non-Apple manufacturers. These devices may remain exposed for months, or even indefinitely, if not properly updated.

How to Protect Your Devices from AirPlay Attacks

To safeguard against these zero-click threats, cybersecurity specialists recommend disabling AirPlay immediately — especially for users who do not regularly use the feature.

To disable AirPlay on an iPhone:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Navigate to General > AirPlay & Continuity.

  3. Tap Automatically AirPlay.

  4. Select Never to turn off automatic connections.

Users are also advised to restrict access settings to “Current User” and consider installing reputable mobile security software to monitor background AirPlay activity and prevent potential malware infiltration.

 AirPlay Users Must Act Swiftly

Disabling AirPlay Could Prevent Widespread Attacks
With 1.8 billion iPhones and over 500 million additional AirPlay-compatible devices currently active, the AirBorne vulnerability represents a global cybersecurity risk. Given the silent nature of zero-click attacks, even cautious users are at risk. Disabling AirPlay and keeping all devices updated is no longer optional — it is essential.

By acting now, iPhone and Mac users can safeguard their devices, data, and networks from what may be one of the most stealthy and widespread Apple-related security threats in recent memory.
