The Ngleshie Alata Traditional area is set to embark on a massive educational and industrial program to transform the James Town community.

The Paramount Chief of the area, Oblempong Nii Wetse Kojo II, said the move is to improve the living standard of the people, reduce crime, unemployment and position the community for strategic investment.

Speaking at a news conference in Accra on Tuesday, he also noted that the fisheries sector will be a major priority since it is the main occupation of the people.

“The people of James Town will live a happy and fulfilled life if there are jobs, especially for the youth. In this regard it is my plan to lead the modernization of fishing in this community since a majority of the residents here fishermen and fishmongers,” he said.

He added that in this technological era the fishing industry has long said goodbye to canoe fishing the methods of fishing and the obsolete methods of preservation and marketing fish.

“I intend to push for the refurbishment of the old harbour and assist in the rehabilitation of old buildings.

“James Town as a beachfront will be exploited for the good of the inhabitants and visitors. It is my desire to lead the crusade for the development of the beach into a world-class recreational area,” he said.

To this end, he said a James Town Tourism development company will be set up to coordinate all tourism-related activities.
