Black Stars defender, Jerome Opoku became the hero of the night when he scored the winner for his side, Istanbul Basaksehir in the Turkish Superlig game against Kasimpasa on Sunday, May 18, 2025.
The 81st minute goal was sure to secure a spot in Europe for his side, Basaksehir.
The victory over Kasimpasa meant that Istanbul Basaksehir will be able compete in Europe’s third competition after the Champions and Europa Leagues; the UEFA Europa Conference League, next season.
The 26-year-old centre-back rebounded his penalty with nine minutes remaining, as his goal catapulted the Istanbul-based club to a 4-point lead over 6th placed Eyuspor, who have played a game more.
Istanbul Basaksehir have got two more games to play whilst contenders, Eyuspor have only one match left to play; a win for Eyuspor on the final day of the season will still keep them a point behind Istanbul Basaksehir, hence, making Jerome’s side’s European spot inevitable.
Opoku has been a very pivotal figure for the club since joining from Arouca in the 2023/2024 season.
He has been involved in five goals so far in the league this season with three goals and two assists to his name.
The England-born defender is expected to make the Black Stars squad for the upcoming Unity Cup tournament in London later this month.
