National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama has pledged to overhaul Ghana's struggling sports sector if elected in the upcoming December 7 general elections.

Speaking during a campaign tour, Mahama highlighted the decline of Ghana’s sports under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, emphasizing the challenges faced by the Ghana Premier League, national teams, and especially the Black Stars.

"The elephant has come and destroyed everything in this country. Today, even the Black Stars cannot score goals," he remarked, blaming the current administration for the nation’s dwindling fortunes in sports.

Under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia, Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a winless campaign—a historic low, as the Black Stars missed the tournament for the first time in 20 years.

Mahama assured Ghanaians that his administration would prioritize sports development, vowing to restore the Black Stars to their former glory and rejuvenate the country's sports ecosystem.

"The NDC is going to come and reorganize our sports so that we can lift the Black Stars again and restore them to their former glory," he declared.

His promise comes amidst widespread dissatisfaction with the nation's declining sports performance, resonating with many who yearn for a return to Ghana's sports heyday.
