In a move aimed at resolving weeks of confusion and administrative backtracking, President John Dramani Mahama has officially reappointed John Ayiku Ocansey as the Deputy Managing Director in charge of Corporate Services at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The reappointment, effective immediately, was confirmed through a formal statement from the Presidency on Wednesday, May 14, 2025.

The decision marks the end of a turbulent period surrounding Ocansey’s position, following contradictory communications from the Ministry of Energy that had cast doubt on his role within the state-owned power distributor.

On March 17, 2025, the Ministry of Energy issued a letter introducing Ocansey as the Acting Deputy Managing Director of ECG.
Signed by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, the letter was expected to formalize Ocansey’s return to the company’s leadership structure.

However, just a day later, on March 18, the Ministry withdrew the appointment, citing the initial letter as an administrative error.

“We wish to inform you that our earlier letter was inadvertently written and hereby wish to withdraw same,” the Ministry stated in a formal retraction addressed to ECG’s Acting Managing Director.

Copies of the withdrawal were also sent to the Presidency and ECG’s Human Resource Department, further fueling speculation about internal disagreements or miscommunication at the highest levels of government and energy sector leadership.

This abrupt reversal raised eyebrows across the energy sector and led to uncertainty within ECG, where leadership stability is considered crucial amid ongoing reforms and operational challenges.
