Black Stars defender Joseph Aidoo made an emotional return to football after a nine-month injury hiatus, receiving a warm welcome from his Celta Vigo teammates during a preseason match against Portuguese side Gil Vicente.
The 28-year-old defender, who had been sidelined with a ruptured Achilles tendon since early in the 2023-2024 season, reappeared in Celta Vigo’s 1-0 victory, coming on as a substitute in the 74th minute for Carl Starfelt.
Aidoo played 16 minutes, marking his first match since his injury.
The occasion was marked by heartfelt support from his teammates, who greeted him with warm embraces and congratulatory gestures.
Overwhelmed by the outpouring of support, Aidoo was seen wiping away tears as he took in the moment, receiving applause from fans as he exited the pitch.
Aidoo’s injury had kept him out for a significant part of the previous season, where he missed most of Celta Vigo's games.
Prior to his injury, he was a key player for the team, featuring in 32 and 35 La Liga matches in consecutive seasons.
Additionally, Aidoo was part of Ghana’s squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, underscoring his importance to both his club and national team.
His return is a significant boost for Celta Vigo as they gear up for the upcoming season, offering both defensive solidity and leadership.
