Supreme Court nominee, Justice Senyo Dzamefe has called for equal accountability across all branches of government, saying that judges must also declare their assets in line with constitutional requirements.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, June 16, Justice Dzamefe stated that the judiciary should not be exempt from asset disclosure obligations that apply to other public officials.

“If the law says all government appointees should declare their assets, and judges are government appointees, why not? They have to declare their assets,” he stated.

When asked whether he had complied with the requirement himself, he confirmed: “Yes, Mr. Chairman.”

His remarks echo longstanding calls from civil society groups and legal reform advocates for greater transparency within the judiciary, particularly amid public concerns over ethics and potential conflicts of interest in public office.

Justice Dzamefe is among a group of nominees undergoing vetting for the Supreme Court, following appointments recently made by President John  Mahama.
