The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been released from police custody after fulfilling all bail requirements set by the Accra High Court.
He regained his freedom on Friday, October 10, 2025, following the completion of all procedural formalities, including the transfer of his passport from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to the court registrar.
Chairman Wontumi’s lead counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, had earlier assured the public that his client would be released once the final administrative step was completed.
“We have met all the bail conditions, except a transfer of his passport from EOCO to the registrar of the court. The officials at EOCO promised to deliver them tomorrow [Friday]. So tomorrow morning, God willing, we’ll be able to secure the release of Chairman Wontumi,” he told the press on Thursday.
The NPP chairman was granted bail on Wednesday but remained in police custody for two nights after initial delays in meeting the bail conditions.
Mr. Appiah-Kubi also reiterated his earlier criticism that stringent bail requirements were sometimes used as a form of punishment, rather than a procedural safeguard, urging reforms to ensure fairness in the justice process.
