A once-loving relationship that lasted nearly eight years ended in tragedy and a courtroom conviction after a 25-year-old online trader admitted to causing the death of her boyfriend.
Vera Asare pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Daniel Omane before the Koforidua High Court on Monday, March 2, 2026.
Although the court accepted her plea, sentencing has been postponed until March 11 to allow for a mandatory pregnancy test — a development that has stirred anger among relatives of the deceased.
Plea Bargain Reached
The conviction follows a plea bargaining arrangement involving the Office of the Attorney General, defence lawyers, and the victim’s family. Under the agreement, prosecutors recommended a 10-year custodial sentence.
Daniel Omane, a well-known mobile phone dealer popularly called “Anelka,” died after months of medical treatment resulting from severe chemical burns.
Relationship Marred by Tension
Prosecutors told the court that the couple’s relationship had long been troubled by recurring disputes and accusations of infidelity. According to the prosecution, Vera Asare had on several occasions confronted women she believed were getting too close to her partner.
The situation escalated dramatically on November 29, 2024, when the victim was reportedly asleep in his room. The court heard that Asare poured a gallon of a liquid substance over him. Later tests by the Ghana Standards Authority confirmed the substance to be acid.
Months of Treatment Before Death
Omane’s cries reportedly alerted his landlord, who rushed him to the Adweso Clinic. He was later transferred to the Eastern Regional Hospital and subsequently to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for specialised care.
Despite months of treatment and intensive medical attention, he died on July 15, 2025, from complications related to the injuries.
Family Reacts to Sentencing Delay
The courtroom was packed with family members and sympathisers of the late Omane, many wearing T-shirts bearing his photograph alongside the message “Justice for Anelka.”
Although the guilty plea provided some closure, the court’s decision to delay sentencing pending a pregnancy test drew criticism from members of the victim’s family.
Speaking after the proceedings, relatives warned against any attempt to manipulate medical results to influence the recommended sentence.
Awaiting Final Sentence
Asare, who had previously been granted bail to care for the couple’s three-year-old daughter, is now awaiting the outcome of the pregnancy test before the court delivers its final ruling.
The case has deeply unsettled residents of Koforidua, serving as a stark reminder of how domestic disputes can spiral into devastating acts of violence.
