Kotoko players pocket GHC2k for beating Hearts in Democracy Cup
18th July 2024
Asante Kotoko players have every reason to celebrate as they secure a reward of GHC2,000.00 for their 2-1 victory over arch-rivals Hearts of Oak in the inaugural Democracy Cup.
The match, held on Wednesday evening at the Accra Sports Stadium, was part of the celebrations marking Ghana's 30th anniversary of parliamentary democracy.
This victory marks the third consecutive win for the Porcupine Warriors over Hearts of Oak this year. Justice Blay opened the scoring for Kotoko after 30 minutes, converting a penalty.
Hearts of Oak responded after halftime with a goal from Asamoah Boateng, igniting hopes of a comeback. However, Peter Amidu Acquah restored Kotoko's lead in the latter stages, securing a 2-1 victory.
Despite a strong effort from Hearts, Kotoko maintained their advantage, cementing their dominance over the Phobians for the 2023/24 season.
Beyond the prize money, this triumph also grants Asante Kotoko a prestigious opportunity to face Major League Soccer (MLS) side DC United in a friendly match later this year, adding an international dimension to their successful campaign.
