KTU Management Visits Students Arrested Over Alleged Cannabis-Infused Drinks and Ice Cream

Management of Koforidua Technical University (KTU) has visited the ten individuals arrested by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) over the alleged production and sale of cannabis-infused drinks and ice cream.

In a statement issued by the University and signed by its Head of Public Affairs, MacClean Lovelace-Dodoo, KTU confirmed that seven of the ten suspects are students of the institution.

According to the University, the management delegation visited the students at NACOC’s national headquarters in Accra after making enquiries at various security agencies to determine which institution had carried out the arrests.

The University said the affected students remain in NACOC custody while investigations continue.

KTU also clarified that the arrests occurred during the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Week celebrations on Saturday, August 1, 2026, dismissing earlier reports that incorrectly associated the incident with Hall Week activities on campus.

The University strongly condemned the alleged conduct, stressing that such actions violate its regulations.

“The University condemns the alleged act of production and sale of cannabis-infused drinks and ice cream, said to have been committed without equivocation.

The University wishes to inform the general public that, pursuant to Article 15 (vi) of the Students’ Handbook of the University, it is an offence for students to involve themselves in such acts of misconduct,” the statement said.

Management disclosed that the parents of the affected students have been contacted and have identified their wards among those under investigation.

The University appealed to parents to remain calm as the matter is being handled through the appropriate legal and institutional processes.

As part of immediate measures, KTU announced the suspension of all SRC activities until further notice and disclosed that a committee has been established to investigate the incident and recommend measures to prevent similar occurrences.

The University assured the public that further decisions would be communicated after the committee completes its work and reaffirmed its commitment to cooperating fully with law enforcement authorities throughout the investigation.
