The presidential candidate for the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, has criticized former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, ahead of the 2024 general elections.
In an interview with selected journalists on Sunday, November 17, Kufuor urged Ghanaians to support Dr. Bawumia in the December polls, describing him as the ideal leader for the nation.
“Given the current global circumstances, I firmly believe Ghana’s economy will improve significantly if Bawumia is elected as President. With divine guidance, he can fulfill this promise. I encourage everyone to back his candidacy,” Kufuor stated.
However, in a sharp response on Oyerepa
TV on Monday, November 18, Mr. Kyerematen expressed disappointment with Kufuor’s remarks, arguing that they compromise the neutrality expected of a statesman.“Kufuor is my uncle, and I respect him deeply, but his actions have tarnished his political legacy. Why would someone of his stature engage in such partisan politics? His endorsement has led to widespread criticism and insults, which could harm his reputation,” he said.
The Movement for Change leader, who broke away from the NPP to establish his party, warned that Kufuor’s involvement in political endorsements could have serious repercussions.
“He’s treading on dangerous ground, and he needs to reconsider his actions. He knows what he’s doing.”
