Barimah Owusu Frimpong, the Adonteng Mmratohene of Akyem Kukurantumi, has confirmed that the suspect whose death sparked violent protests in the town was severely assaulted before being taken to the hospital.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Monday, the chief said the deceased, identified as Bright and popularly known as D-ball, allegedly stabbed a community police assistant in the hand during an arrest attempt.
According to him, the suspect was eventually subdued, but instead of being taken into custody peacefully, he was subjected to what he described as a “merciless beating.”
“They beat him mercilessly. He was weak, and they held his hand and dragged him on the ground. When he died at the hospital, he was still in handcuffs,” Barimah Frimpong recounted.
The chief explained that Bright was arrested by the station officer, identified only as Kumador, along with two community police assistants.
He described the episode as shocking and unprecedented in Kukurantumi:
“I have never witnessed such an incident in Kukurantumi before. I believe it was a result of an adrenaline rush.”
Barimah Frimpong urged the angry youth, who responded by burning down the Kukurantumi Police Station, to exercise restraint and allow due process to take its course.
“We should trust the police to do their work and ensure justice is served. Taking the law into our own hands may harm innocent people,” he cautioned.
He further assured residents that traditional authorities will collaborate with security agencies to restore calm and prevent a repeat of Sunday’s unrest.
Meanwhile, the Kukurantumi Police Station remains closed, with officers withdrawn from the community following the attack.
