Kumasi Residents Told to Months of Planned Power Outages as GRIDCo Upgrades Electricity Network

Residents of Kumasi and several parts of the Ashanti Region have been advised to prepare for intermittent power outages over the next three months as the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) embarks on a major upgrade of the area’s electricity transmission infrastructure.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, during an inspection of ongoing works at the Anwomaso Bulk Supply Point, where he was accompanied by GRIDCo engineers and officials.
According to the Minister, the rehabilitation project will replace transmission lines and towers that have been in service for more than 30 years, infrastructure he said is no longer capable of meeting the region’s growing electricity demand.
He explained that once completed, the project will increase transmission capacity from the current 364 megawatts (MW) to about 1,000 megawatts, significantly improving the reliability and stability of power supply across Kumasi and nearby communities.
Mr. Jinapor noted that temporary power interruptions are unavoidable during the construction period, stressing that the outages are necessary to protect engineers and technicians carrying out work on the high-voltage transmission lines.
He appealed to households and businesses to remain patient, describing the temporary inconvenience as a necessary investment in the region’s long-term energy security.
The Minister cautioned that delaying the replacement of the ageing infrastructure could lead to more serious and frequent power supply disruptions in the future.
He urged residents to view any outages over the next three months as part of the planned upgrade, assuring them that the completed project would deliver a stronger and more dependable electricity network.
GRIDCo Chief Executive Ing. Frank Otchere echoed the Minister’s remarks, saying the replacement of the ageing transmission towers is essential to improving the efficiency and reliability of electricity transmission in the Ashanti Region.
He confirmed that work is already underway and assured the public that GRIDCo will regularly publish schedules for planned outages to help residents and businesses prepare accordingly throughout the duration of the project.
