Presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong, has thrown his support behind Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams for making public the Black Stars’ budget ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Mali.
On Tuesday, September 2, Minister Adams announced a major cut to the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) proposed budget, slashing it from $2,053,240 to $1,320,490, saving the state $732,750. The decision follows a directive from President John Mahama to ensure transparency and fiscal discipline in the management of national team finances.
Mr. Agyepong welcomed the move, describing it as consistent with principles of open governance.
“I think it's in line with transparency. I always believe in transparent governance, so I don't have a problem with that,” he told Luv Sports.
The former Black Satellites and Black Starlets Management Committee member recalled his own service, noting that past officials often worked without financial rewards.
“We didn’t use to take any allowances. We did it from our hearts because we felt a sense of pride just serving our nation. I don’t feel that has a big issue. I don’t want us to place too much emphasis on money.”
Mr. Agyepong further urged the players and technical team to see national duty as an opportunity rather than a financial venture.
“It’s an opportunity for them to showcase themselves. Soccer has become big business now, and most of them are earning quite well. They should see this opportunity to appear for their country as a shot in the arm, add to their CV, and appreciate their value as football players.”
The Black Stars, coached by Otto Addo, will face Chad in N’Djamena on Thursday, September 4, before returning home to play Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, September 8.
Ghana, currently top of Group I with 15 points from six matches, need victory in the two fixtures to strengthen their bid for a fifth World Cup appearance.
