Interim Management Committee member of Asante Kotoko, James Kwesi Appiah, has expressed optimism about the club’s chances in the upcoming CAF Confederation Cup campaign.
The Ghana FA Cup winners and Champion of Champions holders are set to face Nigerian side Kwara United in the preliminary round later this month, with the Porcupine Warriors eyeing a strong start to their continental adventure.
Kotoko, despite their domestic success, have struggled in recent years to make an impact in Africa. However, Appiah — who also doubles as the head coach of Sudan — believes the current playing body is capable of restoring pride to the club.
“For some time now, Asante Kotoko has not been themselves. As a matter of fact, the king himself is now involved. And for that reason, everyone around is trying to help make sure Kotoko does well, especially this year,” Appiah told Pulse Ghana.
“I believe that Kotoko is going to give a good account of themselves. It will be a tough game, but the important thing is making sure you go out there and give your best. I’m confident the players will do that.”
The Porcupine Warriors have their CAF Confederations Cup preliminary round two-legged fixture against Kwara United fixed for Seotember:
-
First Leg: September 19–21, Kumasi (Kotoko home game)
-
Second Leg: September 26–28, Ilorin, Nigeria (Kwara United home game)
The winner of the tie will advance to face Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in the next round of the competition.
