Ghana-born footballer Lawrence Agyekum has officially expressed his interest in representing Nigeria's senior national team, the Super Eagles, due to his dual nationality.

The 20-year-old, who has a Ghanaian father and a Nigerian mother, revealed that he would welcome the opportunity to play for Nigeria if called upon.

In a recent interview with OwnGoalNigeria.com, Agyekum discussed his connection to both countries. While he is currently registered as a Ghanaian player, his Nigerian heritage makes him eligible for the Super Eagles.

“My father is from Ghana, but my mother is Nigerian. I can play for both nations. That’s one part that people don’t know about me, and if the chance to play for the Super Eagles comes, I won’t say no," Agyekum stated.

Agyekum, who has played 13 matches for Belgian side Cercle Brugge, including four appearances in the Europa League on loan from RB Salzburg, brings valuable experience to the table.

However, breaking into the national teams of either Ghana or Nigeria will require consistent performances at the highest level.

The versatile midfielder, who closely follows both nations’ football journeys, noted the contrasting fortunes of the two sides in recent qualifiers.

He added, “I have love for both countries and want to see them do well. Not too good for Ghana in the AFCON qualifiers, but they are doing well in the World Cup qualifiers.

For Nigeria, the reverse is the case. I follow both closely.”

Agyekum's dual eligibility creates an intriguing situation for his future international career, as both nations could benefit from his rising talent.
