Ghanaian midfielder Lawrence Agyekum experienced a blend of pride and disappointment following his debut for Cercle Brugge in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League over the weekend.

Agyekum, who joined Cercle Brugge on loan from Red Bull Salzburg, played the full match as his new team suffered a 3-0 defeat to Westerlo at Het Kuipje on Sunday.

Partnering with fellow Ghanaian Francis Abu in midfield, Agyekum could not prevent the heavy loss despite their best efforts.

Westerlo took an early lead with a goal from Lucas Stassin in the 18th minute.

The home team extended their advantage in the second half, with Stassin scoring again in the 55th minute and Allahyar Sayyadmanesh adding a third goal in the 63rd minute.

Agyekum shared his feelings on X (formerly known as Twitter), saying, “Mixed emotions after losing the first league game of the season, but proud to have made my debut. We live to fight another day.”

His arrival adds to the growing number of Ghanaian players in the Belgian league, now numbering 11.

Despite the disappointing start, Agyekum’s performance suggests he has the potential to make a significant impact as he adjusts to his new environment.

The defeat provides him and his teammates an opportunity to regroup and prepare for their upcoming fixtures.
