Legon Cities Communications Director, Kwame Dwomoh-Agyemang, has refuted claims that the club’s relegation from the Ghana Premier League was due to its flashy branding and entertainment-led strategy during its early years in the top flight.

The Accra-based club was relegated on Monday following a heavy 4-1 defeat to Nations FC at the University of Ghana Stadium, ending their six-year run in the Premier League.

Formerly known as Wa All Stars, the club rebranded in 2019 with a vibrant and entertainment-driven approach. Their high-profile signing of Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan and performances by top artists like Shatta Wale at home games were part of an effort to attract a strong urban fan base and corporate support.

Speaking on Sporty FM, Dwomoh-Agyemang defended the strategy, emphasizing that it was crucial in giving the club visibility and marketability. “We’re not running the club like any other. We wanted to carve a niche, develop talents, and break into the Accra football market,” he said.

He cited Shatta Wale’s performance during a match against Asante Kotoko in 2020 as a turning point in the club’s brand visibility.

“The stadium was empty around 5 pm, and by 5:30, it was packed. People were excited by the buzz. That’s how we got attention for the brand,” he recalled.

Although Legon Cities will now play in Division One, Dwomoh-Agyemang maintains that the club’s early fanfare was a calculated move to build a long-term identity. He added that the focus going forward will be on reviewing the club’s direction and planning a return to the top flight.
