Minority Leader and Effutu Member of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to move past sympathy and concentrate on rebuilding the party after its defeat in the 2024 general election.
In a Christmas message to supporters shared on December 25, 2025, Mr. Afenyo-Markin reflected on the loss and encouraged party members to draw lessons from the outcome, particularly the need for unity.
“My dear patriots, the time for sympathy has passed, and the time for action has now arrived,” he said.
He stressed that unity is central to the party’s success and should guide its conduct, decisions and internal engagements going forward.
“As a party, we should have learned an important lesson, which is that unity is worth fighting for and sacrificing for. The pursuit of unity leads to victory. These lessons must now guide our conduct, choices and conversations,” he stated.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin said the NPP had reached a critical juncture and that the commitment of its members would determine the party’s next phase.
He also addressed persistent public doubts about the party’s readiness for power, urging members to demonstrate maturity and discipline through their actions rather than rhetoric.
“Time after time, observers have questioned whether our party is ready for power. Let us prove to them that we have an answer, and that answer is a resounding yes, not yes by mouth, but through our acts and conduct,” he said.
Turning to the party’s upcoming flagbearer primaries, the Minority Leader appealed to party supporters to safeguard the NPP’s values and traditions.
“Therefore, as we prepare for our upcoming flagbearer primaries, let us treat our party and its traditions as sacred. What our forebearers put together with their sweat and blood, let no party member put asunder,” he added.
