As conversations about the GMX streaming app continue to stir public debate, many Ghanaians have lauded the government for initiating the platform and defending it against its critics.
Abeiku Santana's recent comments dismissing the app as another 'non-functional digital project' have only intensified the defence of the initiative.
Recently, Abeiku Santana, during NDC flagbearer John Mahama's stakeholders meeting with the creatives in Kumasi, questioned the need for a Ghanaian music streaming app, especially when Nigeria, regarded as Africa's music hub, does not have one.
This development has rather intensified the growing support for the app.
However, during a recent discussion on UTV's United Showbiz, Ola Michael weighed in on the subject, stating that Ghanaians are being hypocritical in their defence of the GMX app.
Ola has expressed displeasure over the public's praise of the project, arguing that the government does not even own it, as many believe.
"I was at the launch of the GMX streaming app, and I was also monitoring a recent discussion on Peace FM where the spokesperson for the music streaming company clearly stated that the project is 100 percent privately owned. The government has nothing to do with its establishment," Ola explained.
He added, "Let's stop the hypocrisy. The spokesperson specifically said the app is privately owned, so why is the government taking credit for it? Just because the government was invited to launch the platform doesn't mean they should claim ownership."
About the GMX streaming app
The Ghana Music Xperience (GMX) streaming platform was launched in October 2024 by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in Accra.
The platform is said to be dedicated exclusively to Ghanaian music, offering a wide range of genres, from highlife and hiplife to afrobeat and traditional rhythms.
The app aims at creating a digital space for local artistes to showcase their music while providing a platform for Ghanaians to access and enjoy homegrown content.
