Former Hearts of Oak skipper Yaw Amankwaah Mireku says that picking a captain for the Black Stars should not be based on seniority as there is more qualities a captain must posses than longevity.

On Sunday, the Ghana Football Association confirmed that Andre Dede Ayew has been retained as the captain of the Black Stars while Thomas Partey and Richard Ofori have also been named first vice and second vice captains respectively.

Since then there has been raging noise about why some person have been chosen when there are more senior colleagues around.

According to Amankwaah Mireku , qualities such as commitment , charisma, leadership skills and discipline should override seniority when choosing a captain.

"The first for every player to understand is that their core duty is to play and play well. If by grace, you are selected as a captain, that is a bonus. Being a captain depends on your performance and discipline." he told Rainbow radio.

He makes an example of himself when he was made captain of Hearts of Oak there were more senior members of the squad but he was picked.

Amankwaah Mireku has however backed the decision to retain Andre Ayew as captain of the national team as he has all the tools to succeed.
