Luca Zidane, the second son of French football icon Zinedine Zidane, has officially switched his sporting nationality to Algeria, embracing his paternal heritage in a move confirmed by FIFA on Friday via its Change of Association Platform.
The 27-year-old goalkeeper, born in Marseille and developed through the French youth system, represented Les Bleus from U16 to U20, winning the UEFA U17 European Championship in 2015. However, his path to the senior French national team stalled, prompting a shift toward his roots.
“It’s a proud moment for our family,” a source close to the Zidane camp shared. “Luca has always felt connected to Algeria through his grandparents.”
The decision comes at a pivotal time for Algeria, who are preparing for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco (December 21 – January 18) and are on the brink of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Algerian senior national team announced on their social media platforms about the goalkeeper's nationality switch.

Under head coach Vladimir Petkovic, the Fennecs are rebuilding their squad with a blend of experience and emerging talent. Zidane’s arrival adds depth to a goalkeeping department that includes Anthony Mandrea, Mustapha Zeghba, and Alexandre Oukidja.
Currently at Granada CF in La Liga 2, Luca started the opening matches of the season but has struggled for minutes following an ankle injury in March. Despite the setback, his experience in Spain’s top two divisions and his football pedigree make him a valuable asset.
