National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Yunyoo, Joseph Bipoba Naabu, has called on the leadership of the Minority in Parliament to bring colleagues MPs he describes as ‘Mahama Boys’ to order.

He accuses the said MPs of using fraud and deceit to get other MPs to declare their support for former President John Mahama who is very likely to seek contest primaries later this year in a bid to lead the opposition party in the 2020 elections.

“The leadership will have to call all of us and tell us that if you are supporting Mahama, please have a decent campaign. If you are supporting Honourable Bagbin, have decent campaign…this problem generated from Parliament so I hope the leadership will take action on it,” he said.

Mr Naabu has accused the organisers of MPs4JM campaign, a group canvassing support for the former President, of using subterfuge to get him to endorse Mahama for 2020 elections.

“JM boys perpetuated fraud on me…I was very furious because they deceived me into signing something I don’t believe in. I have endorsed Alban Bagbin and I believe he is the right person to lead the NDC in 2020,” Mr Naabu told Ekosii Sen on Asempa FM Tuesday.

Meanwhile, rejecting the allegations, Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson Dafeamekpor said Mr Naabu does not have his name on the John Mahama endorsement list.

The South Dayi MP said his colleague Joseph Bipoba Naabu was not on the list of MPs who endorsed the former president and found it strange the Yunyoo MP is crying foul and creating the impression as if his name was on the list.

If anything, he said, Bipoba Naabu, may have signed another document and not the one collating signatures in support of former President, Mahama as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer for the 2020 general elections.

Meanwhile, Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, who will lead efforts to bring order among the MPs, has said he is not opposed to the candidature of John Mahama to lead the NDC in 2010 contrary to reports.

Emerging cracks

Deep cracks have developed within the opposition party as party flagbearer hopefuls work towards support to lead the party in the next Presidential elections.

Former President John Mahama seems favoured by the majority of NDC MPs and party executives, however, the camps of Joshua Alabi and Alban Bagbin are presenting a strong force.

The internal opposition is leaving in its wake traces of acrimony and bad press for the party hoping to wrestle power from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The strongest testimony yet of John Mahama weakening grip on the party's power brokers is a recent strong comment by party stalwart, Victor Gbeho.

The former Diplomat recently rallied NDC to support the candidature of Joshua Alabi to become the flagbearer of the party going into the 2020 elections.

Among other things, he said the party must support Joshua Alabi, not someone who is a failure, in reference to John Mahama's inability to retain the Presidency during the 2016 elections.

“So let us just not follow somebody because he looks nice. Joshua Alabi has proven to us that he is somebody who can manage things. Regional Minister, Chairman of Boards and even the university he went into, IPS, as an institute, but today, it is an enviable university which no other university can compare,” the former Foreign Minister said at a meeting with party loyalists in Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region.
