Former president John Dramani Mahama has hit out at current President, Nana Akufo-Addo, for using “lies” to win power during the 2016 elections.

Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) suffered the heaviest defeat in the history of the Fourth Republic, with Nana Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) coasting to a landslide victory.

While the NPP had a whopping 5,716,026 votes, representing 53.85%, the NDC could only manage 44.40% after garnering just 4,713,277 votes.

Mahama believes his successor campaigned on lies and won the 2016 election using deceit.

In Facebook post, the former president hit out at President Akufo-Addo insisting the reality of people’s lives will expose all his lies.

“You can engage in, and tell all the lies to win political power, when you are in government the reality of peoples' lives will expose you,” Mahama wrote.

Mahama is currently seeking approval from delegates of the NDC to contest the 2020 elections as the party’s presidential candidate.

Although Mahama stands as the frontrunner, he is set to be challenged by other NDC personalities who have declared their intentions of leading the party in 2020.

So far, more than 11 persons have confirmed that they will contest as flagbearers of the NDC.

These include Dr. Ekow Spio Garbah, a former Trades and Industry Minister under the John Mahama government; Former Vice Chancellor of the University for Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof. Joshua Alabi, and Member of Parliament for Nadowli-Kaleo, Alban Bagbin.

Last week, the former Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly boss, Kojo Bonsu, became the latest to also pick up forms to contest. He has subsequently launched his campaign.
