President John Dramani Mahama has announced a broad agenda for 2026, signalling a push to scale up reforms and development initiatives focused on social protection, economic transformation and stronger democratic governance.
In his New Year address to the nation on January 1, 2026, the President said progress recorded in 2025 has laid a solid base for accelerated growth and delivery in the year ahead. He said government efforts in 2026 will prioritise expansion and results, particularly in key social and economic sectors.
On education, President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to quality learning, indicating that the digitalisation of schools will continue to ensure classrooms are equipped for modern, 21st-century education.
Addressing healthcare, he announced plans to roll out Universal Health Coverage through the Free Primary Health Care Programme, aimed at guaranteeing access to medical services regardless of a person’s financial situation. He added that the Ghana Medical Trust Fund will provide support for citizens living with non-communicable diseases.
The President also outlined strategies to improve food security and boost agricultural output, saying the sector will be repositioned from subsistence practices to commercial-scale production through mechanisation, value addition and better market access.
In the energy sector, he said government is targeting a 30 per cent contribution of renewable energy to the national power mix, a move expected to lower energy costs and promote environmental sustainability.
President Mahama further announced plans to deliver affordable housing units through public-private partnerships to help address housing deficits nationwide.
On governance, he pledged to intensify the fight against corruption, insisting that there would be no preferential treatment and that public funds would be strictly accounted for. He also disclosed that his administration will implement recommendations from the Constitutional Review Committee to strengthen the 1992 Constitution and deepen Ghana’s democratic framework.
He said the outlined policies reflect a renewed commitment to building a more inclusive, equitable and prosperous Ghana in the coming years.
