The Majority Caucus in Parliament has paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, following his tragic death in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6.

The visit took place at the family’s residence in Accra, where the MPs offered words of comfort and solidarity, joining the nation in mourning the loss of one of its most vocal legislators.

Dr. Murtala Muhammed, who also served as Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, was among eight individuals who died when a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region. The group was en route to Obuasi for official duties.

The Majority delegation expressed deep sorrow over the national tragedy, describing the late MP’s passing as a significant loss to Parliament and the country.

Leading prayers during the visit, MP for Karaga, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, asked for Allah’s mercy upon the departed and urged the bereaved family to find strength in the legacy Dr. Muhammed left behind.

“We are worried here, we are consoling each other, but our brother is in a better place,” he stated.

The visit was part of broader national mourning efforts following the crash, which has been described as one of the darkest moments in Ghana’s recent political history.

Among the victims were Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed; NDC National Vice Chairman, Dr. Samuel Sarpong; and former parliamentary candidate, Samuel Aboagye.

Also killed in the crash were three Ghana Air Force personnel: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, who were operating the ill-fated flight.

The nation has declared three days of mourning in honour of the fallen public servants and military officers. Flags across the country are to fly at half-mast as investigations into the crash continue.
