The Majority in Parliament has urged Speaker Alban Bagbin to declare the Kpandai parliamentary seat vacant following a Tamale High Court ruling that annulled the 2024 election results in the constituency.
According to the caucus, Kpandai MP Matthew Nyindam must step aside from parliamentary duties until a rerun is conducted. They argue that both the MP and Parliament have been formally served with the court’s order and that Nyindam should therefore not continue participating in the House’s proceedings.
Raising the matter on the floor, Majority Chief Whip Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor cited precedent, referencing the case of former Assin North MP Gyakye Quayson.
“When the Honourable Gyakye Quayson was ordered to go through a rerun, Members of this side argued strongly that he could not continue to sit in this House. Eventually, he had to leave. This is a path we have travelled. Precedent has been set. Nobody can tell us today that Honourable Nyindam must have a voice. It won’t happen,” he said.
However, the Minority has vowed to resist any attempt to bar Nyindam from representing his constituents.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, November 26, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin said the caucus would oppose any move to remove Nyindam before all legal processes are fully exhausted.
