Ruben Amorim, the head coach of Manchester United has jumped to the defence of under-pressure goalkeeper, Andre Onana after their devastating loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the final of the UEFA Europa League on Wednesday, May 21.

A 42nd minute goal that decided the fate of both teams on the night, scored by the fantastic and exuberant Brennan Johnson after Pape Matar Sar launched in a sublime cross from down the left side.

The Cameroonian shot stopper has come under severe criticism and scrutiny after he failed to deal with the onslaught effort by the Welsh international but Amorim has defended the efforts of the former Ajax and Inter Milan safest pair of hands.

“There is some time that we didn’t create situations, now is not that time. Now we are creating situation, if you look at the opportunity that we had, it’s different players so it is not a problem of one guy,” Amorim said after the match

“We are not scoring goals, the goalkeeper [Andre Onana] did a great job, of course I believe in my players and it is my job to improve my players.

“I arrived in January and it was not possible to make a lot of changes because of the problems we have to deal with that and then I had to assess the team so the problem is not just player but we are missing chances with all the players.” He added.

The loss meant that Andre Onana and his teammates will not be able to be able to feature in Europe next season as they currently sit 16th on the English Premiership league log with 39 points, one better than Champions League-bound Spurs from 37 games played. The defeat also resulted in a failure of clinching a silverware as the season draws to a close.

The final round of games in the Premiership comes off on Sunday, May 25 with the Red Devils hosting Aston Villa at Old Trafford.
