A high-profile delegation from Manhyia Palace has visited the Asante Kotoko squad to offer encouragement ahead of Sunday’s highly anticipated Super Clash against Accra Hearts of Oak.
The group, which met players and technical staff on Thursday, 12 February, was led by the Chief of Staff at Manhyia Palace, Mr Kofi Badu. He was joined by Offinsomanhene Nana Dwamena Akenten II, Bantamahene Baffour Owusu Amankwatia VI and other traditional leaders.
The visit was intended to inspire the Porcupine Warriors as they prepare for one of the biggest fixtures on the Ghana Premier League calendar.
Kotoko approach the derby after a turbulent spell. They suffered a 3–1 league defeat to Heart of Lions before being eliminated from the FA Cup in a 4–2 penalty shootout loss to Aduana FC at the Baba Yara Stadium. The cup exit led to the resignation of head coach Karim Zito, leaving the club in a period of transition.
Sunday’s encounter therefore carries added significance, not only in terms of league standings but also for morale.
The presence of respected traditional authorities from Manhyia Palace underlines the cultural and emotional weight of the fixture in Kumasi. For Kotoko, the derby represents an opportunity to steady the season and restore pride in front of their home supporters.
Kick-off at the Baba Yara Stadium is scheduled for 17:00 GMT, with anticipation building for another chapter in Ghana’s fiercest football rivalry.
