Legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has bemoaned the current state of the economy, which is affecting every sector in the country.
The legal luminary, in an attempt to better demonstrate the economic crisis being faced in the country and to highlight the cost of living crisis, brought millet porridge, bread, and koose on live TV.
Appearing on TV3’s Key Points show on November 9, 2024, Kpebu lamented the low incomes of public sector workers, who are struggling to survive amid the high cost of living.
“There are statistics where in the public service, workers don’t earn beyond GH¢3500 and there is a huge number which doesn’t end there. I have shown how if you have lunch for GH¢30 alone, it means you will be spending GH¢930 on lunch in a month alone without breakfast,” he said.
According to him, people are gradually becoming malnourished due to high food prices and their inability to afford them, raising concerns about food insecurity.
To explain how exorbitantly expensive food prices have become, Kpebu stated that his early morning breakfast, consisting of porridge, bread, and koose, which used to be affordable, amounted to almost GH¢20, even before he had lunch and supper.
“...the more you reduce the amount you spend on lunch, the more you become malnourished so you see why food insecurity is such a huge problem. Look at the millions of citizens who earn less than GH¢3000 a month, it’s a big problem. My kooko is GH¢5 and if you add the milk it becomes GH¢8. The koose is GH¢2 each so the more you increase the food the more you spend...,” he said.
