Medeama SC have rejected reports linking them with a move for Asante Kotoko captain Samba O’Neil, insisting their focus remains firmly on a potential historic domestic double.
Speculation in local media had suggested that Medeama had agreed terms with the 26-year-old defender and his representatives, including details of a one-year contract. Reports claimed the deal involved a significant signing-on fee and a monthly salary, fuelling talk of an imminent transfer as O’Neil’s current contract nears its end.
But the Tarkwa-based club have moved quickly to distance themselves from the claims.
Chief executive James Essilfie described the reports as “entirely false”, saying the club had no knowledge of any negotiations.
“It’s news to us. We’re also hearing these claims in the media,” Essilfie said.
“Let me put it on record that it’s not true. We don’t want to dignify it. We’re just focused on winning the double.”
Medeama’s response underlines a determination to avoid distractions at a decisive point in their season.
They currently sit top of the Ghana Premier League table, holding a slender two-point lead with five matches remaining. At the same time, they have reached the semi-finals of the MTN FA Cup, keeping alive hopes of securing both major domestic trophies for the first time in the club’s history.
The timing of the rumours raised eyebrows, coming as Medeama push for silverware and eye a return to continental competition, with places in either the CAF Champions League or the CAF Confederation Cup at stake.
O’Neil, a Congolese international, remains one of the most highly regarded defenders in Ghana’s domestic game. As captain of Kotoko, he has been a consistent presence at the heart of their defence, though his future at the club is uncertain amid reports of a possible squad overhaul.
For now, Medeama are making their position clear: with silverware within reach, their attention is on the pitch, not the transfer market.
