Media General has strongly condemned the alleged assault on its North East Regional Correspondent, Solomon Kwame Kanaluwe, by military personnel in Walewale.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the media organisation said it received with deep concern reports that Mr Kanaluwe was attacked on January 26 while lawfully going about his daily activities.
The company stressed that the journalist was neither filming nor covering any military operation at the time of the incident.
Describing the act as “an unwarranted act of violence, a serious abuse of power, and a violation of the fundamental rights guaranteed under the 1992 Constitution,” Media General said such conduct undermines press freedom and public trust in security institutions.
“Media General strongly condemns this act of violence against a journalist who was going about his daily activities without filming any military exercise,” the statement said.
The media house has called on the Military High Command and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to launch an urgent and thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that any personnel found responsible are identified and sanctioned in accordance with military regulations and national laws.
Additionally, Media General has petitioned the Ministry of Defence to address what it described as a worrying pattern of military brutality against civilians, including journalists, during internal security operations.
“The use of excessive force against unarmed citizens is unacceptable and must not be allowed to persist,” the statement added.
