Memphis Depay etched his name into Dutch football history after becoming the Netherlands’ all-time leading scorer, netting twice in a dramatic 3-2 World Cup qualifying victory over Lithuania.

The 31-year-old forward, now with Brazilian side Corinthians, struck his record-breaking 51st international goal by turning in a cross from Cody Gakpo to give the Oranje the lead in Kaunas.

Depay then delivered the decisive moment with a towering header from Denzel Dumfries’ delivery, sealing his 52nd goal in 104 caps.

His double took him past former Manchester United striker Robin van Persie, who scored 50 goals in 102 appearances between 2005 and 2017.

Depay’s journey has seen him feature for PSV Eindhoven, Manchester United, Lyon, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid before making a surprise move to Brazil last year.

He first debuted for the Netherlands in 2013 against Turkey, and opened his international account at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, scoring against Australia.

With the win, the Netherlands remain top of Group G on 10 points from four games. Lithuania, ranked 143rd in the world, briefly stunned the Dutch by fighting back from 2-0 down to level before half-time — becoming the lowest-ranked nation ever to score against them.
