Michelle Obama and Barack Obama have undeniably been one of the most ideal couples of all time. Their togetherness and the love and respect they have for each other is something we’ve always dreamed of for our own relationships. However, all that glitters is not gold and while we may think that their relationship is perfect on the outside, it has not been that flawless all these years.
That’s exactly what Michelle Obama discusses in her latest podcast episode with American television host Conan O’Brien. In a recent post on Instagram, Michelle Obama shared a glimpse of her new podcast episode, where she wrote, “It’s about marriage — a source of strength and perspective through times like these for so many of us. We reflect on our own marriages and experiences as parents and talk about the importance of honesty, authenticity, and being your true self with your partner.”

While in conversation with O’Brien, the ‘Becoming’ author speaks about the challenges she faced in her own perfect-seeming marriage and says, “You have got to know that there are going to be long periods of time when you cannot stand each other…I said it on the book tour as a joke, there were times that I wanted to push Barack out the window right? And I say that because it is like you have got to know that the feelings will be intense…And these periods can last for a long time. They can last years.”

Obama also disclosed the instances in her marriage here she almost gave up. “When we were engaged, I got mad at him about something, and I took my engagement ring off, and I said ‘Forget this, who needs this,’ and I threw the ring,” she says to O’Brien.

However, she did not give up that soon, instead she held on and worked towards a stronger relationship with her husband. “Young couples face these challenges and they are ready to give up because they think they are broken and I just want to say, look, if that breaks a marriage then Barack and I have been broken off and on throughout our marriage. But we have a very strong marriage and if I had given up on it, if I had walked away from it in those tough times, then I would have missed all the beauty that was there as well,” she states.

According to her, communication is the key to a long lasting relationship and one must be able to do it in a way where their partners will listen to them too.
