A fashion student from the Radford University College, Mina Korewaah Frempong has won the Ghana edition of the Vlisco Fashion Fund.

The 30-year-old’s label Korewaah, according to Vlisco presented a completely unique perspective and approach to design with innovative sculptural cuts.

“Mina really pushes the boundaries of fashion and art and pays keen attention to details. Every accessory that was used for the show was handmade by her,” Vlisco said in a release to announce her win.

David Kusi Boye-Doe and Daniel Opoku were runners-up.

Clearstory

Mina’s collection, ‘Clearstory’ examines how architecture can be expressed through fashion.

The inspiration came from five vibrant Vlisco designs featuring geometric shapes, colours, grids and lines.

Clearstory targets working-class women who like to make bold statements through fashion. The photoshoot concept was to make the outfits stand out, hence the grey background.

Some of the techniques used are draping, origami, fabric manipulation and vortex.

The Applications

More than 700 applications were submitted to the Vlisco Fund 2019.

The VFF team meticulously reviewed the eligible applications and then the jury panels conducted interviews in each country.

Based on the interviews, three nominees were given VLisco fabrics and a budget.

The challenge: create a collection of five outfits, a photoshoot, and a one-month deadline. During the last week in November, the juries reviewed the final collections and selected the seven-country winners – Ghana, Benin, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Togo, Ivory Coast and Martha Kabaso from the Diaspora.
