Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign Team, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to set up a "self-protection committee" following the violent incidents that marred the Ablekuma North rerun election.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, July 12, Aboagye expressed serious concerns over what he called the presidency's "lack of response" 24 hours after the violence erupted.
“With what I saw with my own eyes in Ablekuma, and with what I have seen public officials, including Sam George, a cabinet minister, saying – that they are now about to start – I think the NPP has no choice,” he said.
Mr. Aboagye further stressed that the NPP already has a legal, elections, and communications committee, but it was now imperative for the party to quickly form a self-protection committee to address the escalating violence.
“The NPP has a legal committee, an elections committee, and a communications committee. It is only fair that the party quickly reorganises and establishes a self-protection committee,” he added.
His comments come amidst rising tensions and allegations of politically motivated attacks during the rerun election, held across 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North constituency.
The rerun was disrupted by violent clashes, and media watchdogs, as well as election observers, have raised alarm over an increasing trend of journalists being assaulted.
Mr. Aboagye also criticised the silence from the presidency, noting, “We are yet to hear from our presidency. We are yet to hear our president put up even a simple tweet.”
