Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Koku Anyidoho has said the Akufo Addo administration has deliberately put into the public domain allegation of 200 missing state cars, in order to allow government import new luxurious cars for their use.

According to him, the claim by government is a crafty way of preparing the minds of Ghanaians and also justifying the buying of state vehicles for the Ghana @60 anniversary celebration which comes off next month (March).

Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, has revealed there are 208 cars missing from the Flagstaff House pool of vehicles.

The revelations come shortly after government set up a task-force to retrieve state assets unlawfully being held by individuals.

The taskforce is composed of the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Revenue Authority (Customs Division) the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), and persons from the office of the President.

According to Eugene Arhin the missing cars were noticed after the current government took stock of the cars at the seat of government using documents made available by the transport officer at the Flagstaff House.

“What we came to meet was something that surprised all of us. For example, you take a look at the Toyota Landcruiser vehicles, we were supposed to have 196 Toyota Landcruiser vehicles at the Presidency, we only came to meet 74. That means you have a total of 122 which we still cannot find.

“For the Toyota Landcruiser Prados, the total is 73. But we only came to meet 20, so you have a 43 difference.

“You look at something like the Mercedes-Benz; there were 24 in total, but we came to meet 11. Toyota Avalons; there were 28, but we came to meet two and for the BMWs, there were six and we came to meet only two,” he told the media, Wednesday.

But speaking on Neat FM Thursday, Koku Anyidoho stated that he doubts the claims put out by the NPP government insisting, the Akufo Addo administration has other motives for making the allegation.

“The want to go and purchase new luxurious vehicles and they want to justify it, so they must say vehicles have been stolen so that when they go and purchase those luxurious vehicles, Ghanaians will not complain because they’ll say the government didn’t find any cars when it took over power.

“You watch and you’ll see very luxurious cars being used during the Ghana@ 60 celebration. To be frank if President Akufo Addo goes to buy new fleet of vehicles and uses them, I’ll have no problem because he’s the President of the Republic, the law allows him to do so. He should go ahead and do it, but if you want to create the impression that your predecessor looted state vehicles, that is why you’re buying new cars that will not be fair.

“If you want to buy new vehicles as President of Ghana…armoured cars, bullet proof etcetera…go ahead and do it. We all have to give you the protection that you need as president.”
