In-form Ghanaian forward Mohammed Sofo continued his impressive goal-scoring run in Major League Soccer, netting his fourth league goal of the campaign as New York Red Bulls defeated Charlotte FC in an entertaining clash to secure their third straight win.
The 20-year-old, formerly of Guidars FC, was quick to restore New York’s lead in the 29th minute, just three minutes after Kerwin Vargas had equalized for Charlotte, cancelling out an early opener from Wiktor Bogacz.
Sofo's strike — a sensational finish that capped a strong team move — comes just days after he scored against DC United, reinforcing his rising reputation in MLS. He started the match and lasted 87 minutes before being replaced by Omar Valencia.
The Red Bulls further extended their lead in the second half through Cameroon legend Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who came off the bench to score two penalties. Although Liel Abada pulled one back for Charlotte, it was not enough to mount a comeback.
Elsewhere in the game, Patrick Agyemang, an American forward of Ghanaian descent, assisted Vargas' goal, while Sofo's Ghanaian compatriot Ronald Donkor came off the bench to replace Peter Stroud late in the game.
Sofo now boasts seven goals across all competitions this season and is emerging as a key figure for the Red Bulls in their playoff push.
